Felony
Offenses
are the most serious of criminal offenses. A
crime is classified as a felony if it has the
potential of one or more years of prison
confinement. Some examples of felonies include
murder, rape, kidnapping, robbery, burglary, and
various drug offenses.
Misdemeanor
Offenses
are crimes that carry jail sentences of less
than a year. In most cases, however, the maximum
sentence for the most serious of misdemeanors is
6 months. Misdemeanor Offenses include domestic
violence, theft, assault, and disorderly
conduct.
Traffic
Offenses
involve the simple speeding ticket, up to the
most serious of misdemeanor traffic offenses -
driving while under the influence of drugs or
alcohol. A conviction of a traffic offense may
include a fine, jail time, and a suspension of
driving privileges. Some serious traffic
offenses may be classified as felonies, such as
aggravated vehicular homicide.
